This is one of the most original adventure/suspense books I have read. I had read it when it was published , kept and read it again and again, and bought the Kindle edition to have it with me. It is an archaeological fiction riddle embedded in a very realistic Israel of the 50's of the former century (I should know - I have lived here, in Israel - then and now). The goal - finding the only national symbol of biblical Israel - the Temple-Menorah - is really mind boggling. Especially when we bear in mind that it is the only symbol which may be verified by comparing it to it's representation in Titus Arc in Rome. The Israeli characters are enchanting. Written as a personal story by it's British hero - The archaeologist - the book is written in the hectic style of it's hero mind. The plot twists are ingenious. The solution is chilling in it's matching to real life politics. Lionel Davidson had done a very good job indeed !Product details

A Long Way to Shiloh Lionel Davidson 9780571242894 Books Reviews
In A Long Way to Shiloh, Lionel Davidson's hero, Caspar, a scholar of Semitic history -- who may or may not be Jewish -- finds himself in a search of modern Israel for the seven-branched candelabrum, a mythic artifact of Jewish tradition, looted from Solomon's temple in Jerusalem by the Romans following the revolt of Judas Maccabaeus in the first century a.d.
His search is hindered by a kidnapping, abetted by a love-affair with a beautiful Yemeni Jewish girl (whose brother is scowlingly suspicious of every other male) and reaches a climax in an attempt to find the candelabrum in a bat-infested mountain cave in Palestinian territory near the Dead Sea and Caspar's hair-raising but funny escape into safe Israeli territory.
The search for the candelabrum goes nowhere -- or, rather, ends in an effort to find the candlestick in the rubble of a huge real-estate development, a lavish hotel and gardens, designed to attract Jews of all nations to vacationland Israel. A decision by a rabbinical court is all that preserves the possibility that the sacred candelabrum might somehow survive the bulldozer. Caspar and his allies relinquish to search, with nothing left but the hope that someday . . . And hope, Davidson is at pains to dramatize, is the birthright of the Jewish people.
It was the special genius of Lionel Davidson to write a story centered on Israel that is both comical and dead serious. But then, it was Davidson's gift to blend the absurd, the romantic and the factual. All of his many books, and this one not the least, put tho gift on display.
Originally published in 1966 with the title "The Menorah Men" and was a number one best seller at that time. It is being republished under the current name eight years after the passing of the author. True to the original title the novel concerns the seeking after of a long missing Menorah or candelabrum sacred to the Jewish religion. The opening of the book describes the finding and utilizing a burial place by soldiers of Jewish forces in order to keep it out of Roman hands.
Two thousand years later Casper Laing a young and brilliant professor of Semitic languages is asked to decipher writings on an ancient parchment unearthed in Israel. Dr Laing determines that the words on the parchment are directions to the burial place of the true Menorah an ancient priceless artifact. Since the perceived location would place it in territory that could be either Israeli or Jordanian both countries start out to find it. Laing is given a young Israeli female soldier to work with him in searching for the Menorah, and of course, she is both pretty and smitten with him. A love affair develops between the two in spite of the fact that the girl is engaged to shortly be married to another soldier.
Most of the events take place in the Negev desert with plenty of action and well researched descriptions to keep the reader riveted to the plot and actions of the characters. Laing was utilized in other books by Mr Davidson, with his personality and deductive strengths brought out for the reader to appreciate. No problem in looking for additional reprints of Lionel Davidson's novels as his ability to provide an engrossing read is evident in this book.
This was a re-read for me, after many years. Davidson has always been one of my favorites. He has the gift of creating a deeply textured plot and milieu, and placing interesting, 3-dimensional characters in it. This is a bit lighter than his two masterpieces The Rose of Tibet and Kolymsky Heights, but still well worth reading and rereading.
